Wooden Coffee Tray with a Raised Rim, Oval or Rectangular in Two Sizes

A small tray cut from solid wood, with a shallow well and a rim standing up around the whole of it, for the cup of coffee you would otherwise put straight down on the table. It comes as an oval or as a rounded rectangle, and in two lengths.

What changes when the cup stops sitting on the table

A mug on a bare table is a mug somebody has to move. A nightstand carrying a watch, a phone and a pair of reading glasses reads as clutter however carefully you set them down. Slide a tray under any of that and the same objects become an arrangement, which is a strange amount of work for one flat piece of wood to do.

The long one takes a French press and a mug side by side, so the coffee goes through to the other room in one trip and comes back the same way. The short one is about the size of a paperback laid flat, which is a nightstand and a bathroom counter.

The rim is the whole argument

This is not a flat board with the edges sanded. A shallow well is cut into the top face and a rounded lip stands up around it, unbroken the entire way round, with no spout, no notch and no gap at the corners. A cup pushed toward the edge stops against that lip instead of going over it. A spoon laid down stays where you put it rather than sliding off onto the sofa.

The well has soft rounded corners rather than square ones, so a drip comes out again with one pass of a cloth.

Where the cheap wooden tray gives itself away

The version that costs a few dollars is a thin panel of engineered board with a photograph of oak printed onto it and a strip of molding glued around the edge. The printed grain repeats. The molding lifts at one corner. The whole thing is finished in a hard, glassy coat that looks like plastic in daylight and chips like it too.

This one is solid wood. The grain runs the length of the tray and carries straight on across the rim, with knots and darker streaks left in it. The surface is satin rather than lacquered, so you can still see the pores. It also means no two are alike. Color runs from a light honey brown through to something closer to chocolate, and the piece that arrives will be somewhere along that range.

Which one to pick

The oval is the softer of the two shapes, and it works nicely somewhere nothing else has a straight edge — a nightstand, a windowsill, the middle of a coffee table. The rectangle sits square against the back of a counter or along the edge of a desk, lined up with everything else that is already square.

Small holds a cup and a couple of small things, or a watch and a pair of glasses overnight. Large holds a pot and a cup together, or a candle with room to spare around it. The exact figures for both are in the specifications below.
