There is one strip of kitchen floor that does all the work, and this is a flat woven mat made for it. Water and oil soak into the weave instead of sitting on the tile, and the rubber underside holds it still while you stand on it.

No foam. No pile. No corner curling up to catch your toe. Lay it down and stand on it.

The two feet of floor nobody thinks about

Every kitchen has one strip that takes all the traffic, running along the front of the units and past the sink, and you stand on it for an hour a night without noticing it is there. It is also where everything lands: splashes off the washing up, drips from the fridge door, whatever comes off a colander on the way to the pan.

On bare tile all of that sits in a film until somebody walks through it in socks. The surface here is a coarse flat weave that pulls water and oil down into itself instead, so the floor under your feet stays dry and the mat dries out on its own.

A bath mat is the wrong tool for it

Most people put something down eventually and it is usually a bath mat, which is the wrong shape and, more to the point, the wrong surface. Deep pile holds cooking grease and never quite comes clean.

A tea towel on the floor slides. A plain rug slides further, and a rug that slides in front of a hob is a genuine problem rather than an annoyance.

This one is flat, so nothing stands proud of the surface for grease to collect in, and the underside is a bonded sheet of non-slip rubber rather than a few dots of it. It grips tile, hardwood and laminate, and stays put when you turn on the ball of your foot.

The corner the cheap ones cut

Look at the edge, because that is where a floor mat dies. Most are cut from a roll and hemmed with one line of stitching, and the weave starts letting go at a corner inside a month.

This one is bound instead: a flat tape folds over the raw edge and is stitched down on all four sides, so there is nothing loose for the weave to unravel from and the corners stay square. And the whole thing goes in the washing machine. Roll it up, wash it, put it back down.

Which size and which color to pick

Six sizes in two colors, and the sizes fall into two shapes.

The three shorter ones, XS1, XS2 and S, work nicely in front of one thing: the sink, the hob, the back door, wherever you end up standing. The S is the most generous of the three if you want both feet on it with room to spare.

The three long ones are runners, and they suit a stretch of floor rather than a spot. The M covers a sink and the unit beside it, the L runs a galley comfortably, and the XL takes a whole side of a kitchen. Exact figures are in the specifications.

Beige is a warm oatmeal with cream and rust flecks through the weave, and it settles into pale timber and white units without asking for attention. Gray is cooler and darker, and holds up better against gray tile and a hallway that sees shoes. After that it is just a strip of floor you can stand on without thinking about it.
