Ordinary wall bats vanish the moment the lights go down

Black paper bats are the easiest Halloween decoration there is, and they look great at three in the afternoon, when the sun is on the wall and every wing throws a sharp little shadow. The trouble starts in the evening, which is when anybody actually comes over. Turn the lamps down and a black bat on a dim wall is simply gone.

These are made for that part of the night. Each bat is stuck to the front of a small round base with an LED inside it, and the base is stuck to the wall. So the light comes out from behind the bat and lands on the paint around it. What you see from across the room is a soft wash of glow, mostly purple and brightest right behind each bat, with every bat a sharp black shape against it.

Every bat stands off the wall, and most of them fold into shape

The bats are cut from glossy black PVC, and on eight of the ten designs each wing is scored with straight fold lines running out from the body. Bend the wings forward along those lines and the bat takes on a shallow flying shape, with its wing tips reaching out into the room. The other two designs stay flat, one clean silhouette with the wings raised high, and they break up the pattern of the flock.

The base holds the bat a short way off the wall, and that small gap is what lets the glow spread out behind it. It is also why they still look good in daylight, with the lights off and the room bright. The folds catch the light, every bat throws a real shadow, and none of them sits flat on the paint like a sticker.

Every base is battery powered and has its own switch, so there is nothing to plan around. There is no socket to be near and no wire to hide along the baseboard. A pair of double-sided adhesive pads holds each base to any smooth surface indoors.

How many bats you need depends on the wall

Every pack holds the same mix, in the same proportions. There are ten designs across five sizes, from 12 inches down to 5, and about a third of the bats in any pack are the small ones. That mix is what makes a group look like it is flying somewhere rather than lined up in rows.

The 12 Bats and 24 Bats packs work nicely around a front door, across a window, or streaming out of one corner above a sofa. The 36 Bats and 48 Bats packs will cover a feature wall or follow a staircase up to the landing. The 60 Bats and 72 Bats packs are for a long hallway, a whole stairwell, or a party room you want lit from end to end.

Put them up when the evenings start getting dark early, and the wall does the rest every night until November.
