A waxed canvas backpack with a padded camera compartment in the bottom half and an ordinary day bag above it. The body, the lenses and the flash each travel in their own cell, and everything else travels on top of them.

No black nylon. No tactical webbing. No logo telling a whole train carriage what you are carrying. Load the bottom half once and leave it loaded.

Your camera stops travelling wrapped in a jumper

Most cameras get carried in an ordinary rucksack with a fleece pushed round the body and a lens rolling loose in the bottom, which works right up until the moment you put the bag down harder than you meant to.

The bottom half of this one is a padded box with soft dividers in it. They fasten with hook and loop, so you move them to suit whatever you are carrying that day.

The door on the side

The whole front drops down when you want to repack, and that is the wrong move when the light is going and the shot is in front of you.

So there is a second way in. A zip runs down the left side of the bag and opens a door straight into the camera compartment, which means you swing the bag off one shoulder, reach in and lift the body out while the bag hangs on the other strap.

The inside face of that door carries a zipped mesh pocket, so the filters, the cards and the spare battery ride in the door itself rather than somewhere under the long lens.

The tripod rides underneath

Two webbing straps cross the base over a pair of ribbed rubber pads. A folded travel tripod slides under them and sits along the bottom of the bag, off your shoulder and out of your hands.

Above the camera section, a plain compartment opens wide on a zip between two canvas handles. A jacket, a flask, a sandwich. A flat slot against the back panel takes a tablet or a laptop, and the internal figures are in the specifications so you can measure yours first.

Two zipped pockets sit in the lid, and a bottle drops into the open mesh pocket on the right hand side.

Where the cheap camera bag gives itself away

The thirty dollar version cuts the same corners every time. The shell is thin nylon that creases and stays creased. The dividers are sewn where the factory put them. The only way in is the one at the front. Worst of all, it looks exactly like what it is, which is a bag with two thousand dollars of glass in it.

This one is waxed cotton canvas with leather straps and warm gold-toned metal rings, and it reads as a bag somebody takes to work. The wax gives the cloth a cloudy, mottled surface that beads a shower and dries off, though the zips are ordinary zips and heavy rain is a coat over the top or a run for the car.

Khaki, Army Green or Gray, and in all three it looks like luggage rather than equipment. That is the point of it.
