Plastic chain with LEDs set inside every link, so after dark it glows along its whole length like a line of hot metal. Wrap it round a wrought-iron gate, a fence post, a tree trunk or a life-size skeleton, pick orange or purple, and run it from a solar panel or from batteries.
No outlet by the gate. No extension cord across the lawn. Nothing to plug in at all.
It looks like chain because every link is built like one
Each link is a long rounded oval about three inches from end to end, molded from a thick round rod of PVC and threaded through the next one at right angles, the way a real chain is made. That is what lets it do what a chain does in a Halloween yard. It hangs in soft swags between the bars of a gate, drops straight down a porch post, and winds round a tree or a plastic skeleton.
By day, switched off, it still reads as chain. The orange version is a bright, even safety orange, so a gate wrapped in it on a Saturday afternoon already looks like something is being kept in, or kept out.
After dark, the whole link lights up
The light sits inside the plastic rather than hanging off it, so each link glows right round its full loop, end to end. Orange burns a deep red-orange with warmer flecks where the LEDs sit, and purple glows a vivid violet that turns the same gate into something stranger. There is a flashing function as well as a steady glow.
The 2 m length carries 100 LEDs and the 3 m carries 160. It is waterproof and rated for wet locations, so a night of rain in late October is no reason to bring it in.
Which one to pick
The solar version has a small panel on a thin wire. Set the panel somewhere that sees daylight, switch it on, and it charges through the day and lights up by itself at night, with eight lighting modes on a button on the panel. It suits a gate, a fence or a tree out in the open, well away from the house.
The battery version runs on 3 V and has no panel at all, so it works under a covered porch, in a dark corner of the yard or indoors on a banister, where the sun never reaches. Batteries are not included.
The 2 m length works nicely for a single gate, a skeleton or one porch post, and the 3 m will swag along a stretch of fence or climb most of the way up a tree. Hang it once at the start of the month, and the yard has a centerpiece that looks the part in daylight and glows after dark.
