A Japanese-style wall clock made of wood, with twelve raised numbers standing off a wood-grain face, two slim hands and nothing else to look at. The quartz movement is silent, so it can hang above a bed or a desk and the only time you notice it is when you look up for the time.
No ticking. No second hand. No glass catching the window.
A clock you only notice when you want the time
You already know how a wall clock works, and nearly any of them keeps decent time. The trouble starts when the room goes quiet, because the tick you never heard during the day becomes the loudest thing in the bedroom, and a sweeping second hand keeps pulling at the corner of your eye while you read.
This one leaves both out. The movement makes no tick at all, and there are only two hands, one for the hours and one for the minutes. Glance up and you have the time. Look away and the wall goes back to being calm.
Raised numbers on a wood-grain face
The case and the dial are both wood. A narrow rounded rim runs all the way round, and the face sits set back inside it, so the clock has real depth on the wall at 1.6 inches deep instead of reading as a flat printed disc. The grain on the face runs in fine straight lines from top to bottom.
Each of the twelve numbers is a separate cut-out piece that stands slightly proud of the face and throws a small shadow, which keeps them easy to read at a glance. They are set in a plain modern typeface, all upright, with no minute marks or logo between them. The two hands are flat, slim and finished in the same shade as the numbers, so the whole face reads as two colors and no more.
Brown for warm rooms, Natural for light ones
Brown pairs a reddish-brown rim with a soft mocha face and pale cream numbers and hands. It sits well against walnut furniture, leather, deep green and warm painted walls, and it is the one that stands out on a white wall.
Natural is pale wood from rim to face, with numbers and hands in a walnut brown. It is the quieter of the two, and it looks at home with oak, linen, white and pale gray, where it blends into the room rather than standing apart from it.
Either one, at 11.8 inches across, suits the space above a sofa, a sideboard, a bed or a desk, and works just as well in a kitchen or a home office. It runs on a single AA battery, sold separately.
Put it on the wall, and the room keeps the time without making a sound.
