A short, straight-sided ceramic cup in loose brushed stripes, standing on its own flat striped saucer. It holds 9.5 fluid ounces, which is a full cup of coffee rather than a couple of sips. The saucer gives it a proper place to stand when you put it down.

No coffee ring on the table. No hunting for a coaster. Pour it, set it down, and the cup and saucer look as if they were made to go together, because they were.

Nine and a half ounces is the size a cup should be

Most cups that come with a saucer are built for espresso, and the coffee is gone in three mouthfuls before it has cooled enough to taste. Most mugs go the other way, and the last third sits going cold on the desk while you get around to it. At 280 ml this one lands between the two: room for a proper morning coffee, a milky one with the froth on top, or tea poured out from the pot one cup at a time.

The cup is short and wide, just under three and a half inches across and a little over three inches tall, with straight walls and a D-shaped handle that leaves room for your fingers. The saucer is a flat round dish four and three quarter inches across with a low upright rim, so the cup stands on a level floor instead of in a dip. A drip that runs down the side lands on the saucer, not on the wood underneath.

Stripes with the brush still in them

The stripes run straight up the cup from the base, over the rim and a short way down the inside, so the color frames the coffee as well as the outside of the cup. They are not ruled lines. Each one has the streaky texture of a flat brush, the edges wander a little, and some run slightly wider than the next, which is exactly what keeps the cup from looking printed.

On the saucer the same stripes run straight across the dish in one direction and carry on over the rim without turning, so every line on it stays straight from one edge to the other. Everything sits under a glossy glaze that picks up the light from a window. When you are done, the cup and the saucer both go in the dishwasher.

Four colors, and two of them carry a second line

Green and Brown are one color on a warm white ground. The Green is a soft olive that suits pale oak, a few plants and a kitchen in morning light. The Brown is a warm caramel that looks at home on a darker wooden table beside the toast.

Blue and Pink add a thin line down the middle of every white gap. On the Blue it is a wavy cobalt line running between dusty slate stripes, which makes it the busiest pattern of the four and the one that sits best against dark wood and denim. On the Pink it is a straight navy line between pale blush stripes, softer and a little more polished.

Whichever one you choose, the saucer matches the cup, and the coffee has somewhere to stand.
