A nylon harness vest that spreads a pulling dog's weight across a padded panel down his back, with a pouch on each side so he carries his own bowl, bags and treats.

It goes on like any harness. A padded strap round the neck, two more under the belly, and a side-release buckle you can work with cold hands. What changes is where the pull ends up.

A thin strap harness is two bands and a buckle

You already know what a harness does. If your dog pulls, you also know what the cheap ones feel like at your end of the leash: a loop at the neck and a loop at the chest joined by an inch of webbing, so everything he puts into the leash arrives through two narrow bands. It rides up. It twists around, and it leaves a mark where it sat.

This one is built the other way round. A long panel of nylon lies flat along the spine from the shoulders to the last rib, and a padded flap wraps down over the chest with open mesh on the side that touches the dog. The neck strap and the two belly straps still hold it on, but they are not what takes the strain. The pull spreads across a hand's width of padded cloth and runs the length of his back instead of gathering in one place.

He carries his own kit

A flat saddle pouch hangs down each flank, and a smaller zipped box pouch mounts on the webbing of one of them. Between them they take the things that otherwise end up in your coat: a roll of bags, a folding bowl, a handful of treats, a spare leash. They sit low against the ribs, where a loose saddle bag would be swinging off his back after half a mile.

Rows of webbing run down both sides of the back panel and across the face of each pouch, tacked down into loops. The zipped box pouch mounts on that webbing and comes off it again, so you can walk him in the bare vest on a Tuesday and put it back on for a Saturday.

The handle is the part you end up using most

A webbing handle stands up from the top of the back panel, just behind the shoulders, and it is the difference between shouting and simply taking hold. A gate swings open. A bike comes around the corner. You put a hand through the handle and he is beside you, steadied across the back rather than hauled by the neck.

Two triangular metal rings sit on the panel as well, one near the shoulders and one further back. Clip the leash to the forward ring on a busy path, and to the rear one when he has a longer line.

Measure his chest before you pick a size

Put a tape around him at the deepest point behind his front legs. Chest girth decides the size here, not his weight and not his breed. Take the size his measurement falls inside, and if he lands near the top of a range, go up. The straps take in a little room easily. A harness that will not close is a trip to the post office.

Black, green and tan are flat colors, and the camo is printed on the pouches and the flanks with plain tan webbing and a plain tan panel on top. Whichever one you take, the walk stops being something you brace yourself against.
