Telling the time is the easy part

You already know what a clock is for, and nearly any of them will tell you the time. The harder part is finding one that suits a room with wood, linen and warm light in it, because most of what is on offer is either a plain round dial or a chrome disc made for a kitchen. This one is shaped and colored more like a piece of furniture, so it sits comfortably with a dark wood sideboard or an old bookcase.

It is also taller than it is wide, which changes how it fills a wall. Hung above a sideboard, a desk or a bed, it reads as a framed piece first, and the time is right there whenever you glance up.

The small details are what make it look older than it is

The frame is a band of dark brown wood grain that follows the outline all the way round. It stands slightly proud of the face, so the dial sits recessed inside it like a picture in a frame. The face is a warm cream with a faint mottled finish that looks like old paper or plaster, and it is matte rather than glossy.

Just inside the frame, a fine solid line and a dashed line run side by side around the dial like a row of stitching. Only the 12, 3, 6 and 9 are numbered, and every other hour gets a short double line. Two black bar hands and a thin black second hand turn from a small center cap.

The vintage, distressed finish is deliberate. It is made to look naturally aged, so the marks, tone and texture vary from one clock to the next, and they are part of the design rather than flaws. The surface is not meant to be smooth or polished, and yours will not match the photographs mark for mark.

Quiet enough to hang above the bed
