A desk-sized tower with a fan behind the grille and a water tank in the base. It draws room air across a damp pad and pushes it out cooler and a little damper than it came in. Six speeds, a timer, and nothing to vent out of a window.

No hose. No window kit. No installation.

It is a cooling fan, and that is a different thing from an air conditioner

An air conditioner has a compressor and a refrigerant circuit, and it moves heat out of the room through a hose. This has neither. Inside there is a fan, a pad, and 300ml of water, and it works the way a wet towel in a doorway works: air passing over water loses a little heat to evaporation, so what reaches you is cooler than the room.

That means it cools the airstream rather than the room, and the further you sit from it the less you feel. On a desk, a bedside table or a worktop with the vent pointed at you, that is enough. Across a whole lounge it is not, and this page is not going to tell you otherwise. It also does more in dry air than in muggy air, because air that is already damp has less room to take up water.

Labelled diagram of the air cooler fan showing the control panel, the fan behind the grille and the water tank in the base

Six speeds, a timer, and it will sit on a desk without taking it over

It stands 11.6 inches tall and 5.5 inches across, so it takes up about the footprint of a large mug and clears a monitor stand. The panel on top is a lit display with the speed, the timer and the mist on separate buttons, and it is readable in a dark room without being bright enough to keep you awake.

Six speeds matter more on something this size than on a big fan, because the bottom of the range is genuinely quiet and the top is what you want in the first ten minutes after you come in from outside. At 18 watts it draws less than a light bulb.

The tank is the whole mechanism, so it needs filling

Fill the tank and the air arrives cooler. Let it run dry and you still have a perfectly good six-speed fan, just without the cooling part. The tank holds 10.1 fluid ounces, which is a small jug, and how long that lasts depends on the speed you run it at and how dry the room is.

It goes on a desk in July, in a bedroom on the nights when the window does not help, and back in a cupboard in September. Empty the tank before it goes away.
