A pattern that reads from across the room

From the doorway the quilt looks like a clean grid of colored triangles, each one meeting its neighbors along a fine orange line. Step closer and every triangle carries its own detail, a fan, a medallion or a curl of leaves, so the surface never looks flat.

The colors are warm but not loud. Burnt orange does most of the work, with slate blue, sage and a dusty violet in between, which keeps it easy to live with in a room of plain walls and wood floors. A slate blue border frames the whole quilt.

Three layers of muslin, soft from the first night

Muslin is a loose, breathable cotton weave with a natural crinkle, and three layers of it give the quilt some body without trapping heat. It drapes over the edge of the mattress in easy folds instead of sitting stiff on top. The wide border is the same crinkled muslin, stitched down along its edge so it frames the bed with a neat line.

The pattern runs through to the back, so there is no plain underside to hide. Turn it over when you want a change, or fold the top back over the pillows.
