A trail camera you strap to a tree or a fence post at the edge of the yard and then leave alone. When something moves within 33 feet it wakes in 0.7 seconds and takes 16MP photos or 1080p video, in color by day and in black and white by night, lit by 38 no-glow infrared LEDs.
No flash going off in the dark. No guessing what dug up the lawn. No waiting at the window at midnight for the fox to come back.
See what comes through after the lights go off
Most of the wildlife around a house moves after dark, which means the most interesting part of the day is the part you sleep through. The raccoon working through the trash cans, the deer that crosses the bottom of the yard, the owl on the fence: you only ever see the evidence the next morning.
The infrared panel on this camera works at 940 nm, so it shows no red glow while it lights the scene for the lens, and whatever walks in front of it carries on undisturbed. A light sensor switches between day and night on its own. Night pictures come out in black and white, which is how infrared works, and daytime pictures are in full color.
The front carries a muted tree-bark camouflage, so on a trunk it reads as part of the bark rather than as a box someone strapped there.
Fast enough to catch the animal, not just its tail
The motion sensor reaches about 33 feet and the camera fires in 0.7 seconds, so a deer stepping into view is still in the frame when the picture is taken. Each trigger can take one, two or three photos in a row, record a clip of anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes, or take a photo and then a clip.
Photos save at 16MP or at one of four smaller sizes, and video at 1080p, 720p or 480p, so you can trade detail for room on the card. Sound recording can be switched on or off.
Set up and checked right where it hangs
The camera opens like a book. Inside are a 2.0 inch color screen and six buttons, so you set the date, time and mode at the tree and scroll back through what it caught without carrying a laptop out with you. A three-position switch sets it to off, test or on, and the settings can be locked behind a four-digit password.
The included strap threads through two channels on the back and goes round a trunk or a post. There are no screws to drive and no tools to bring.
Made to stay outside through the weather
It is rated IP66 against rain and dust and works from −4 to 158°F, so it can stay on the tree through a wet week or a cold snap. It runs on four AA batteries and takes up to eight, and it saves to a micro SD card of up to 128 GB. Neither the batteries nor the card is included, so have both ready before its first night out.
After that, the only job left is reading the card in the morning to find out who came by.
